This site, tentatively named "Goose Pasture," was chosen due to its location near the Věstonice Reservoir in South Moravia and the presence of key plant species typical for the European priority habitat 1340 – inland salt meadows. The area is also home to rare and endangered animal species, such as the European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), the redshank (Tringa totanus), and the garganey duck (Spatula querquedula).

With careful management, this location has great potential to support a wide variety of amphibian species. The area has shallow, sunny shores of small water bodies, which are ideal habitats for amphibians to live and breed – and such environments are currently in short supply in our landscape.

Since July 2024, three domestic water buffalo have been grazing at the site, helping to break up dense stands of reeds and goldenrod and create a diverse mosaic of vegetation. Buffalo enjoy wallowing in mud, which naturally creates and maintains shallow pools that are beneficial for insects and amphibians.

We would like to thank the Ohař Buffalo Farm for kindly providing the animals, and to Povodí Moravy and the South Moravian Region, who provided valuable support for our iniciative.
